MEC Jacob Mamabolo has announced the appointment of the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) to deliver the state-of-the-art Vereeniging Intermodal Facility. The announcement was made after the MEC with Emfuleni Local Municipality and the Sedibeng District Municipality held a stakeholder engagement meeting with the taxi industry representatives from the Sedibeng District Municipality.
The facility will be delivered under the auspices of the Transport Infrastructure House - a project monitoring and management facility through which the Department will fast track the delivery of projects.
Local taxi industry welcomed the appointment and pledged their full support. MEC Mamabolo assured the industry there will be no delays in the construction of the intermodal transport facility which has been delayed for many years.
The Vereeniging Intermodal Facility is one of key projects prioritised for upgrading into multi-purpose transport nodes where different modes of public transport connect.
"The introduction of GMA team to this project is a positive step in ensuring the completion of this much-needed facility. GMA's expertise in running major projects will greatly assist in delivering the project on time, within budget and at the right quality to prevent further delays than are costly, " MEC Mamabolo said.
He added that the institution of clear governance models with committees assuming control and accountable for revenue generation through advertising, cleanliness, security and provision of ablution facilities will be introduced as part of the project.
"Rank facilities were identified by Premier David Makhura in his State of the Province Address as needing urgent intervention from the Gauteng Provincial Government. The appointment of GMA as the implementing agent for this project is part of our ongoing strategic vision of Growing Gauteng Together Through Smart Mobility.
The MEC added that "as part of stakeholder engagement, we have also adopted an integrated approach that includes MMC's for Transport, the taxi industry and commuter representatives".
