Premier David Makhura has urged all Gauteng residents to observe the lockdown regulations and to continue practising the golden rules of hand hygiene and good cough etiquette.
Addressing members of the media during the weekly  Provincial Command Council press briefing, on Thursday 2 July 2020 , Premier Makhura said: "These measures remain critical in slowing down and in  disrupting the spread of the Coronavirus.
"We remain concerned about cluster outbreaks at gatherings such as funerals. We are appealing once again to communities to remain extra cautious when organising and attending suchgatherings."
The month of June has seen a sharp spike in the number of confirmed cases on a daily basis in the country with Gauteng reported to have  the largest number of active cases.
"The Provincial Coronavirus Command Council is consulting with various sectors about the need to reinstate some of the drastic measures that will ensure that the pandemic is contained in the province.
"We will also make representation to the National Command Council on the need to re-introduce stringent measures, including possible intermittent localised lockdowns and slowing down of re-opening of sectors and schools," said Makhura.
Makhura further noted that because there was currently no cure nor vaccine for COVID-19, people needed to change their behaviour to slow the transmission of COVID-19.
"We have to do whatever it takes to contain the spread of the pandemic. Through behavioural change we can mitigate and minimise the impact of the pandemic.
"COVID-19 is transmitted from person to person, the only way to prevent transmission is to avoid physical contact. We all have a responsibility to play our part and take the necessary precautionary measures to stop the spread of COVID-19," added  Makhura.
