Gauteng residents with prepaid electricity meters are urged to upgrade their meters by 24 November 2024 to avoid disruption in their electricity supply.

The power utility, Eskom, has notified prepaid customers that the current meter vending codes will expire on this date.

A new series of electricity vending codes, known as Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2), will be rolled out to meters nationwide, preventing the existing codes from becoming obsolete.

Customers must confirm that their meter has been updated to KRN2 to ensure uninterrupted service.

If a meter has not been re-coded, it will no longer accept purchased tokens and cease functioning.

This upgrade applies to all prepaid meters, whether supplied by Eskom directly or through municipalities.

To check if your meter has been updated to KRN2, enter the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on the keypad of your prepaid meter.

The screen will display either the number "1" or "2" (sometimes accompanied by letters).

Eskom said number 1 indicates that your meter is still on KRN1 and requires an upgrade to KRN2.

Number 2 confirms that your meter is already on KRN2 and can continue accepting tokens. Additionally, your electricity token slip will show KRN2 if your meter is updated.

Eskom warns that the 24 November deadline is final, and no extensions will be granted.

Meters not upgraded by this date will no longer accept electricity tokens, rendering them inoperable.

"Failure to re-code by the deadline will prevent customers from loading electricity tokens, rendering their meters inoperable," the power utility said.
