Weekend vaccinations and pop- up sites have helped push Gauteng over to the three-million vaccination mark.

A total of 3 056 869 vaccines had been administered in Gauteng, with more than 1.3 million people who are now fully vaccinated.

The vaccination rollout programme continues to expand through innovative partnerships between government, civil society, faith-based, media, retail and the private sector

Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi said while the provincial government welcomes the milestones, there is a need to vaccinate as many people as possible ahead of the anticipated fourth wave of Covid-19.

"Through jabs, the country aims to reach a mass immunity level of at least 65% to 70%. With the current pace, it is not a far-fetched goal. Nevertheless, vaccine hesitancy, prevailing especially older people, threatens the country's gains against the pandemic,"

"The department has deployed mobile vaccine sites in several spots with low vaccination rates, going door to door to people who refused vaccination, to convince them and give them jabs on site," said MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi.

Gauteng department of health emphasized that COVID-19 vaccines reduce people's chances of getting severe illness and hospitalisation in the event they contract the coronavirus.

According to World Health Organization WHO, people who are fully vaccinated with a two-dose coronavirus vaccine have a 50% to 60% reduced risk of being infected with the delta variant, even asymptomatically, compared with unvaccinated people.

Government and social partners are considering various options to incentivise those who take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Options being considered include opening up access to places of hospitality, worship, sports and entertainment to those who are vaccinated.

Government continues to encourage everyone including vaccinated people must continue practising the COVID-19safety measures to minimise contact and reduce infections in communities.

All Gauteng sites, both private and public, accept walk-ins regardless of whether or not people are registered on the EVDS.
