Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced that the provincial government is ready to present a concept plan for a high-speed rail link between Gauteng (Johannesburg) and Limpopo (Polokwane) to Cabinet in a matter of weeks.
The announcement was made at the Smarter Mobility Africa Summit (SMA) held in Midrand, Johannesburg. The SMA, in partnership with Gauteng, marked the provincial launch of the October Transport Month Campaign.
In its fifth year, the summit boasted a lineup of local and international industry leaders and exhibitors.
In his opening address, the Premier stressed the Provincial Government's Vision 2030 plan is focused on repositioning the province by attracting investment and consolidating economic potential. This is done towards cementing Gauteng's reputation as an economic powerhouse.
On transport infrastructure, Premier Lesufi indicated the provincial government is ready to unveil the first high-speed rail link between Johannesburg and Limpopo.
He highlighted both provincial governments were in discussion regarding the construction of a railway line linking the two provinces to alleviate traffic congestion and take advantage of economic spinoffs flowing from undertaking such a project. The Premier added the provinces had met and resolved to appoint a team to conduct a feasibility study on the project and then approach the national government.
These included engineers and experts to work on assessing the feasibility of the project and to determine the best route. The provincial governments will also look at securing public-private partnerships to fund it.
The project allows the country's financial hub to link to one of the country's largest rural provinces to support growth in both locations. This connectivity will enable, amongst others, the exchange of cultures, goods whilst contributing to economic growth and prosperity.
In her address to the summit, MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela outlined the Department's plans on dealing with mass transit. "Internationally, significant investments are being made in mass transit systems, including high-speed trains, light rail, and bus rapid transit. These systems alleviate congestion and offer sustainable alternatives to private vehicles". She added that Gauteng plans "for improved public transit are in line with this global trend, and we are also considering expanding our rail network to connect with neighbouring provinces and regions".
