Gauteng has administered three million COVID-19 vaccines to its residents.

At least 2.3 million people are vaccinated with one dose, whilst 1.3 million are fully vaccinated.

Another milestone is, 75 683 jabs were administered on Friday, setting a new record for the number of daily vaccines.

The province achieved this through innovative partnerships between government, civil society, faith-based organisations, media, retail and the private sector.

To ramp up the vaccination process, the government has launched different vaccination sites such as public and private centres the pop-up vaccination sites and drive through vaccination centres.

The province has also opened more sites that operate during weekends for the convenience of those who are at work during weekdays.

Gauteng MEC for Health Nomathemba Mokgethi said there was still a long way to go, as far as vaccinations were concerned.

"The joint efforts between government and the various partners are bearing fruit.

However, we still need to move with speed to vaccinate as many people as possible ahead of the anticipated fourth wave of COVID-19."

In a weekly media update report, the province indicated that options are also being considered include opening up access to places of hospitality, worship, sports and entertainment to those who are vaccinated.

Sunday, Premier David Makhura joined by Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi visited the Saaberie Chishty vaccination site in Lenasia. The site is run with the help of volunteers and accommodates both walk-ins and drive-thru.

On Thursday, the province unveiled a pop-up vaccination site at the SABC's Auckland Park campus.

All Gauteng sites, both private and public, accept walk-ins regardless of whether or not people are registered on the EVDS.

The department has advised that people return for the 2nd dose on the appointed date for full protection against the virus, even though it is not at the site where they received their first dose.

Everyone including vaccinated people to continue practising the COVID-19 safety measures to minimise contact and reduce infections in communities.
