Branden Banks is a man who has transformed his life from one of addiction and crime to a path of redemption and service. Once entangled in the dark world of substance abuse and criminal activity, which led him to serve time behind bars, Banks made a conscious decision to turn his life around.

Today, he stands at the forefront of community service and advocacy, dedicated to helping others overcome similar challenges.

"After serving my time, I was prepared to come back as a changed man who could make an impact in society," Banks reflects.

Upon his release from prison, Banks found purpose and fulfilment in his work at an NPO that serves as a beacon of hope for vulnerable women and children in Vlakfontein, South of Johannesburg. Funded by the Gauteng Department of Social Development, this organization runs a feeding scheme that provides meals for 200 to 300 children every day, ensuring that no child in their community goes to bed hungry.

In addition, the organisation offers a safe house for women who have experienced abuse or need shelter and support.

A qualified recovery coach, Banks plays a crucial role in helping children and adults struggling with addiction find their way to rehabilitation centres and access the support they need to overcome their challenges. He understands firsthand the struggles of addiction and is able to provide empathy, guidance, and encouragement to those ready to take their first steps towards recovery. Banks' contributions extend beyond his work as a recovery coach. He serves as a liaison between clients and Social Workers, helping to bridge the gap between individuals in need and the resources available to them. His commitment to serving others and his dedication to making a difference in the lives of those around him, are truly commendable.

During Child Protection Week, the Department raises awareness about the different forms of abuse and neglect that children may experience, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation. By educating parents, caregivers, teachers, and the broader community about the signs of abuse and how to prevent it, the Department seeks to create a safer environment for children to thrive. In addition, Child Protection Week highlights the importance of providing support and resources to children who have experienced trauma through counselling, therapy, and other interventions.

On a community level, Child Protection Week encourages individuals and organizations to get involved in efforts to safeguard children's well-being. This can take many forms, from volunteering at local youth organizations to advocating for child-friendly policies in schools and communities. By working together, we can create a more supportive and protective environment for all children.

On this collective effort, individuals like Branden Banks play a pivotal role. Banks' journey from a life of crime and addiction to one of recovery and service is a powerful testament to the possibility of redemption. His tireless efforts and unwavering determination have transformed his life and made him a shining example of resilience, compassion, and hope.

As he continues to inspire others with his story of redemption, Banks remains a beacon of light for those seeking a path to a better life.
