Minister for Basic Education, Angie Motshekga has expressed her disappointment on the leaking of Mathematics Paper 2 which was supposed to be written on the Monday, 16 November 2020.
Minister Motshekga said the penalty for offences related to examinations are serious.
"We are however very disappointed that a question paper has been leaked and some learners appear to have had access to it before it was written.
"A learner can be banned for up to three years from writing the NSC exam and if you are an employee in the system you could be jailed," said Motshekga
The minister was this afternoon updating the media on progress made in the writing of final matric examinations in Pretoria, on the 11 day of the 30-day matric examination where up to 83 papers out of 216 have already been written.
Minister Motshekga said, 2020 academic year would go down as the most challenging, complex and unpredictable year.
"This years' Matric Examination started later than usual to manage the impact of COVID-19 on teaching and learning," she said.
This year's examination is the largest with over one million, learners currently sitting for their examinations.
Minister Motshekga said: "The resilience of both our teachers and learners is commendable. To us the fact that we were even able to start the Matric exams, a combined one with more than 1 million people writing, was a major achievement,"
The exam is taking place in 8 200 exam centres in all nine provinces with 80,000 invigilators. Two hundred and sixteen question papers are being written with more than 10 million scripts printed.
Amongst other challenges faced during this period is protest actions, which resulted to other learners arriving late at the exam centres, power outages, learners who are diagnosed with COVID-19 and need special attention and ghost candidates.
This morning taxi associations in Gauteng embarked on a strike, and the department has put in place plan to assist the learners who will be affected by the strike
The exam started on 5 November and will end on 15 December 2020.
