Probation Officers work with some of the most
pertinent issues within our communities. These issues involve Substance Abuse,
Crime Prevention and recently added Gender-Based violence (GBV). Probation Officers
also work with the courts, providing diversion programs to ensure that
individuals do not form part of the Justice system and correctional services facilities.
 
We often have substance abuse awareness programs in
places where ordinary adult community members gather, these places include
Clinics, SASSA service stations as well as parks. Teenagers often have fun
during interactive awareness programs at schools on the dangers and effects of
addiction on the body. When it comes to Social Crime Prevention, we believe
that knowledge is power as most social crimes such as Xenophobia,
Discrimination, Prejudice, bullying and many others stem from lack of
knowledge. 
 
If people are equipped with knowledge, they are less
likely to make decisions or commit social crimes that stem from fear or lack of
understanding. Social Crime Prevention focuses on educating the public on the
LGBQTI community, helping young people identify signs of bullying, and giving information
on Human Trafficking and many other topics that affect social crimes.
 
The diversion programs are on court referral basis and
they involve programs such as “stop to start” (A drug prevention program) and
“Rhythm of Life” a life skills program to mention a few. Communities often feel
hopeless in their endeavour to build stability and raise responsible adults. Probation
Officers hold hope for these communities.
