Government has celebrated the production of the 100 train set at the Gibela Rail Consortium Dunnottar factory in Ekurhuleni. The event took place on Monday, 04 July 2022.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula was joined by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and City of Ekurhuleni's Executive Mayor Campbell at the celebrations.

This achievement puts Gibela on the right track to reaching the target of manufacturing 600 six-car trains for the rail agency. The R1 billion investment, a state-of-the-art plant, is amongst the most advanced train manufacturer and produces train sets for Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) with the aim of revitalizing the rail sector and promoting commuter rail as a transport mode of choice.

Through the private partnership, the government plans to rehabilitate the local railway line, whilst the milestone is seen as a giant leap towards the attainment of affordable integrated public transport network.

The new trains have the capacity to ferry up to 1,200 people, have climate control systems and to enhance security, closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) have been installed.

Since 2014, this project created two thousand six hundred and ninety-five (2,695) direct jobs. A total of 8,209 jobs were created during the construction phase.
