The Gauteng Executive Council on Monday, 15 February beat the morning traffic to wish learners well as they started the 2021 academic year amidst the Corona Virus pandemic which resulted in schools reopening later than planned.
Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Faith Mazibuko visited Lakeside Secondary School in Sedibeng as part of the Gauteng’s school’s readiness campaign.
During the visit, MEC Mazibuko encouraged teachers and leaners to adhere to all COVID-19 health protocols.
MEC Mazibuko added that the Gauteng Department of Community Safety is working with the Gauteng Department of Education to increase the number of community patrollers deployed in schools that are crime hotspot.
Sector police will work closely with the community Ppatrollers in ensuring safety at all schools across the province.
"We are going to intensify safety at Lakeside Secondary School by deploying community patrollers and ensuring visible policing through the local police station,” said Mazibuko.
The MEC has called on all education stakeholders to support schools and the education of children in order to ensure stability in schools. Gauteng Health MEC, Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi on the other hand visited Ramusukula Secondary School in the Sedibeng Health District as part of the schools reopening activities.
Dr. Mokgethi engaged with some of the matric learners at the school and handed over school uniforms and some dignity packs.
“Our government continues to ensure that education is prioritized as one of the most important activities in the lives of our people.
“Importantly, we need to ensure that the education of our children becomes a societal issue that must continue to occupy our energies , not just for today when schools re-open, not just when the Grade 12 results are released but every single day of the year,” she said
