Women in South Africa are not safe in their homes, streets, malls and everywhere as the reality is that women are getting raped and brutally killed daily.
This is according to Department Central Corridor Acting Director, Refilwe Mthiyane who was speaking at a panel discussion on gender-based violence and femicide on Tuesday.
The dialogue was hosted by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety in partnership with the Office of the Student Success at Wits University on Tuesday, 31 August. 
"Violence and abuse is the reality and its four times affecting disabled women and children, there is nothing to celebrate in Women's month but rather it should be a month of mourning all the women who have lost their lives in the hands of their loved ones," said Mthiyane.
The trauma that women were exposed to was unimaginable and often led to survivors struggling to regain self-worth, said Mthiyane.
Department of Justice said government had put measures in place to deal with the needs of survivors of GBV.
"Most of our courts nowadays have improved their ways to an extent that victims and perpetrators do not share the same room as a way to avoid secondary victimisation of victims," said Matome from the Department of Justice.
President of Wits SRC Committee, Thembesile Dabula said higher education and training institutions need to educate young men about unlearning backward social, cultural and traditional practices.
"We need to include gender-based violence exclusion in Wits University. We as students would like to call upon the Provincial Government to introduce gender based-violence exclusions in higher learning institutions," said Thembesile. ​
