Department of Roads and Transport 2022/03/29 - 22:00
Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo, joined by the Head of Department, Dr Darion Barclay, met representatives from Unity in Diversity (UID) to discuss matters of common interest. The meeting took place on Monday, 28 March 2022.
UID is an action group representing e-hailing drive-partners.
The aim of meeting was to obtain feedback and confirmation from UID on whether the organization will continue to participate in the mediation process following an earlier meeting held on 21 March 2022. UID has affirmed its commitment to the mediation process, has expressed its faith in the process and the outcomes it seeks to achieve.
The meeting forms part of an ongoing mediation process by the Office of the MEC, the Department, UID and affected stakeholders including e-hailing companies. They serve the purpose of ventilating and mediating a dispute between the e-hailing driver partners and the e-hailing companies.
Parties had agreed the Department will convene a consultative workshop with e-hailing driver-partners where various issues affecting the sector will be discussed further.
This follows a national three-day strike by driver-partners contracted to app companies (Uber, Bolt, & DiDi) where they called for government's intervention and use of laws to protect them from alleged exploitation.
The parties agreed on a list of priority issues to be addressed and sought to be resolved through the mediation process. These relate to security, pricing and fare structuring, downgrading of vehicles on e-hailing platforms and the creation of a consultative forum between e-hailing companies and driver-partners.
It is expected the mediation process will be concluded by the end of June 2022.
