Modipakoma Sewing and Multi-Purpose Primary Cooperative continue to inspire the community.

Situated in Kagiso Extension 12 in the West Rand and funded by Gauteng Department of Social Development, it aims for greater heights as it expands on service offering.

Its management team is determined on creating employment for the community members through their business. The cooperative manufactures clothes and school uniform.

"Our organization was established in 2016 after we saw Gauteng Department of Social Development assisting lot of cooperatives to be part of School Uniform Manufacturing Project. Following the establishment of our cooperative, we started manufacturing traditional clothes for people around our community. Meanwhile we gathered information on the processes to become part of the departmental project. We complied with all the processes and met requirements. We grabbed the opportunity and got funding", said management which comprises of Selinah Khava, Pinky Mofeti, Jeannette Makhubela, Dikeledi Makhubela and Tebora Panama.

During an interview with Weekly Bulletin, Panama said it was not easy when they started five years ago, as they did not have knowledge of running a business. Due to the guidance and the support they got from Gauteng Department of Social Development they were able expand and created more jobs. The cooperative now produces school uniform, PPEs, clothes for individuals and church uniforms.

"We always rope in community members through offering them skills such as sewing skills. We welcome everyone who is determined, although Covid-19 pandemic is limiting our abilities. We wish to get a bigger space and more machinery for expansion and continue to create more jobs. We want to empower others as we were also empowered by Social Development. We will forever be grateful to the department for the opportunity they afforded us with, and we will show our gratitude by empowering others", she concluded.
