Over the past two weeks, Gauteng has seen an increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases and people are advised to guard against complacency, as the virus is still in our midst.
On Sunday, the Department of Health reported that the province currently accounts for 2640 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 901088 recoveries and 19651 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
"Vaccinating together with our behaviour remains the most powerful weapons to reduce the spread of COVID-19 during the festive period," the provincial government said on Friday.
Health experts warn that the country is likely to experience the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections during the festive period.
"A higher vaccination rate will substantially help reduce the impact of the fourth wave and avoid stricter restrictions. At least 70% of the adult population must be vaccinated by mid-December."
People are encouraged to continue practising safety measures such as wearing a mask, maintaining a safe physical distance, washing hands regularly with soap and water, and ensuring good ventilation.
As at 21 November 2021, 6.6 million vaccinations have been administered, with 4.3  million people receiving one dose of either J&J or Pfizer and 3.5 million people have been fully vaccinated in Gauteng.
The provincial government says it is up to each and every one of us to convince our family, friends and co-workers that vaccination is safe and that it could save their lives.
"Vaccination will help us return to the things we love such as attending sporting, cultural, religious and entertainment events of our choice safely."
The vaccination programme is free and open to all people in South Africa regardless of nationality.
"You can go to a public or private site that offers vaccinations even if you are not on medical aid."
Children aged 12 to 17 are also eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. Parents, caregivers and legal guardians are encouraged to have open discussions with their children about the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine, to help them make informed health choices.
