Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has warned residents that now is not the time to be complacent, with the peak of COVID-19 pandemic expected towards the end of the month.

Makhura said despite the province's recovery rate being a "positive story," as it now stands at 70%, it was still too early to celebrate, as the peak is expected towards the end of August and beginning of September.

Makhura was speaking at the   weekly Provincial COVID-19 Command Council media briefing on Friday 7 August 2020.

"During the June, July months, recoveries in the province were at 30%, a drop from the 60% during the April, May period. It is comforting that the recovery rate, as of this week, sits at 70%.", said Makhura.

The province went through a difficult period in the last two months which recorded the highest number of fatalities, and hospital admissions.

"Hospital admissions, were bursting at the seams, but we are getting better now..

"Some COVID-19 hotspots in the province are recording a decline in the number of new COVID-19 cases, while others are still "running their course", added Makhura.

Makhura cautioned that although it appears as if the surge is easing, it would not be correct to say that the peak has passed, "it may have been the first wave of the peak, we may still go through the toughest time of the peak".
