Maintenance of roads infrastructure to acceptable levels in the province was on the spotlight at the Provincial Roads Maintenance Summit held on Monday, 13 June 2022 in Muldersdrift on the West Rand. 
The one-day summit, hosted the Department, was attended by representatives from the National Department of Transport (NDoT), CSIR, Members of Mayoral Council responsible for roads and Transport, Heads of Transport Departments and senior management. Head of Department Dr. Darion Barclay chaired the summit.
The summit's objectives are to devise strategies to address roads maintenance challenges throughout the province. Notwithstanding the effectiveness of the Department's Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign, a more vigorous and unified approach was required to improve roads conditions across Gauteng. This to enhance driving experience, ensure safety of all road users as well as promote seamless movement of people and goods to grow the province's economy.
In the spirit of intergovernmental relations, the Department invited all municipalities to share a presentation on Strategies and Plans to Improve Roads Maintenance 2022/23.
At the conclusion of the session, summit resolutions were drawn up as follows:
The signing of the Smart Mobility MOU was deferred to the next HoD's Technical Forum;
After the tabling of the NDoT's National Roads Indaba Report, it was requested to share the criteria for 25% allocation of the road maintenance grant;  
On the CSIR's Impact Assessment Studies, municipalities were requested to provide contact details and participate in this research exercise to generate useful maintenance data,
A report on road encroachments was noted and was deemed to be work in progress and updates will continue to be shared.

The summit will serve as a platform to enhance maintenance efforts, set standards for good governance and intergovernmental working relations.
