Presidency’s appoints one of our own

​President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Bongani Ngomane as a part-time member of the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE). 

Ngomane, who is currently a Chief Director for Research, Population Development and Stakeholder Relations at the Gauteng Department of Social Development will serve the CGE from 01 March 2023 to 28 February 2028. 

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) was established in terms of Section 187 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa to promote respect for gender equality and the protection, development, and attainment of gender equality in South Africa. 

In a statement issued by the Presidency, President Ramaphosa has in terms of section 3(9) of the Commission for Gender Equality Act, 1996 (Act No. 39 of 1996) as amended, appointed a new Chairperson and Commissioners for the Commission for Gender Equality. 

The appointments were as follows: 
• Adv Olave Nthabiseng Sepanya–Mogale appointed as the Commission’s Chairperson on a full-time basis with effect from 01 March 2023 to 28 February 2028. 
• Adv Thando Gumede as a full-time member of the Commission with effect from 01 March 2023 to 31 December 2027. 
• Mr Bongani as a part-time member of the Commission with effect from 01 March 2023 to 28 February 2028. 
• Ms Leelambal Subrayan Naidoo as a part-time member of the Commission with effect from 01 March 2023 to 28 February 2028. 
• Ms Leonashia Leigh-Anne van der Merwe as a part-time member of the Commission with effect from 01 March 2023 to 28 February 2028. 

Ngomane echoed, “I have done extensive work in the sector of men and boys and I succeeded to put Gauteng in the national map, in respect of Men and Boys issues, through introducing projects such as 365 Men’s Awards, which was launched by the President in 2015, Africa Men’s Day, Adopt a Gogo, which is currently employing 55 volunteers majority of whom are women and also by fostering a boys mentorship programme through Scouts SA, which is having about 180 beneficiaries.” 

“The work that men’s forum is doing in fighting GBVF through workshops, practically supporting families affected by femicide. It is these small contributions that I believe attracted the attention of those who nominated me to be considered for appointment by the President,” added Ngomane. 

The President has wished the newly appointed members of the Commission well in their work and roles. 3
