Tourism Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has outlined tourism-related activities that will open under Alert Level 2 of the COVID-19 risk-adjusted strategy and directions for the sector.
This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday, 15 August, announced the resumption of most economic activity under Level 2.
After months of not being able to travel between provinces without permits, South Africans can now do so as limitations on inter-provincial travel were lifted with effect from Tuesday 18 August 2020.
"We are appreciative of the role played by various organisations in all sub-sectors, small businesses in townships, rural communities,Women in Tourism, the Youth in Tourism and other individuals who have reached out to make submissions as we move to rebuild our sector," said Kubayi-Ngubane.
Although most businesses are fully operational, they still have to adhere to the level 2 regulations.
Accommodation requirement announced under Level 3 remain and in addition to the direction accommodation for inter-provincial leisure travellers is opened but must keep to 50% of occupancy space.
Restaurants the requirement announced under Level 3 remain and in addition to the direction , onsite consumption of alcohol is permitted at licensed restaurants, bars and incompliance with the curfew time that starts at 10pm.
"I will be embarking on site visits as part of leading from the front as we encourage South Africans to not only support the tourism sector to preserve the business and the jobs but also to enjoy their beautiful country after months of being in their homes," said Minister Kubayi-Ngubane.
She also assured all South Africans that although COVID-19 impacted the sector's operations, it did not impact its sense of hospitality.
