Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela joined City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Roads and Transport Cllr Kenny Kunene and MMC for Community Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku for an intergovernmental meeting to pursue collaborative partnership around matters related to roads construction, maintenance and general safety.
The meeting was held at the JRA’s offices in Johannesburg on Monday, 31 March 2025.
Amongst the topics under discussion included strategic partnership between Joburg Roads Agency and the provincial Department on restoration and maintenance of traffic signals, exploring ways of working together on road maintenance and improve public safety.
Highlighting the importance of the meeting, MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said it will serve to “looking at the collaborative programmes to ensure we deliver our services efficiently and effectively”.
Addressing the meeting, Joburg MMC for Roads and Transport Cllr Kenny Kunene indicated the city has launched a campaign aimed at restoring public infrastructure, “Operation Lokisa”. Its aim is to attend to specific and urgent issues that raised by residents.
He added the roads agency has “entered the market to sell (asphalt), which is one of our proactive measures to become self-sustaining and profitable”.This, he added, was discussed with the MEC.
The MMC, joined by management led a site visit to the JRA’s asphalt plant in Booysens, Johannesburg. The delegation also made a stop at the FNB Stadium’s Rea Vaya bus station in Soweto to assess new WI-FI technology together with an entry system accommodating various debit cards as a payment tool.
