Gauteng provincial government aims to double the number of vaccinations administered per day to 100 000.

Addressing the media during his visit to the newly-launched vaccination site in Saulsville, Premier David Makhura said the province is ready to scale up the vaccine rollout, with a particular focus on the metros.

"The province wants to increase the number of people being vaccinated a day, currently we are vaccinating about 53 000 people a day, we want to increase the number to 100 000 people a day with a particular focus in the City of Joburg, City of Ekurhuleni and City of Tshwane because that's where most people are," he said.

The Saulsville Arena, which has the capacity to vaccinate 2 000 people per day, will also offer drive-thru services.

He stressed that the intention was to reach the elderly people. The group aged 60 and above and men, in general, were still hesitant to get vaccinated.

About 2 176 076 people have been vaccinated in the province. However, only half of Gauteng's pensioners out of the target of 1.3 million people have been vaccinated. Those aged between 50 and 59, stand slightly above 500 000.

"We are concerned about the drop in the numbers of older people registering in the province for vaccination. The province has not reached its target of vaccinating people over the age of 60," the Premier said.

Young people are called to recruit the elderly to come with them when they go for their vaccination.

The province government will be expanding vaccination sites across the province as it continues with the drive to get more people to take the jab.- END
