September marks the National Heritage Month and this years' day will be celebrated amidst the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is also a global health emergency. 
The day marks the nation's diverse culture and heritage and will be celebrated under the theme "Celebrating South Africa's living human treasures."
COVID-19 pandemic has exposed many realities such as poverty, inequality, unemployment and gender-based violence (GBV). 
The National Heritage Month was launched by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa on 07 September 2020.
Heritage Month recognises aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and intangible such as music and performances, historical inheritance, language, the food as well as the popular memory.
On this day, South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.
Gauteng province's heritage is characterised by people from different walks of life, identification, cultures and beliefs who are also shaped by different historical events and memories.
The celebration of Heritage Month has created a conducive environment for all people to embrace and celebrate what inherited from their  forebears.
Various events  will be staged throughout the country and the province to commemorate this day.
