On September 5, 2024, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, in collaboration with the Department of Sports, Arts, and Recreation, hosted the Provincial Golden Games at Ruimsig Stadium, Central Corridor.

The event was supported by the Department of Health to ensure the well-being of senior participants throughout the games. All Gauteng corridors were represented, with participants competing in a variety of sports as part of the Active Ageing Programme, which promotes healthy aging by engaging older persons in sports and recreational activities.

One of the highlights of the event was the debut of 66-year-old Joseph Munyai from the East Rand Corridor. Munyai triumphed in the men's 60+ 400-meter race, finishing with a record time of 2 minutes and 32 seconds. A seasoned athlete, Munyai has been competing in the Comrades Marathon since 2000 and has earned a bronze medal in the event. Reflecting on his victory, Munyai attributed his success to his regular training, which has kept him fit and healthy, allowing him to avoid illnesses that require medication. His impressive performance at the Golden Games has secured him a spot to represent Gauteng in the National Golden Games, set to take place in October. Confident in his abilities, Munyai looks forward to continuing his success at the national level.

Munyai's commitment to fitness has been a lifelong passion, leading him to complete 21 Comrades Marathons, earning him two green numbers, a significant achievement that grants him a permanent race number. "I love running because it has tremendous benefits for active ageing, including improved physical and mental health, social engagement, and a sense of accomplishment," Munyai shared. He emphasized how the Active Ageing Programme encourages older adults to adopt healthy lifestyles, pursue their passions, and remain active, helping them to feel youthful despite their age.

The Golden Games aim to promote healthy living among seniors, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and abilities on a national stage. By fostering physical activity and social connection, the event contributes to the well-being and happiness of older adults, offering them a positive outlet to remain engaged and active during their golden years.
