Two police officers accused of killing 16-year-old Nateniel Julies briefly appeared in the Protea magistrate's court on Monday in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Nathaniel Julies.
The two police officers, Simon Ndyalvana and Caylene Whiteboy, are both attached to the Eldorado Park crime prevention unit. The Julies family said they were thankful for the support, but disappointed that the co-accused officer seems to be a woman from the community.
Julies, who had Down Syndrome, was killed in Eldorado Park on Wednesday when, he supposedly neglected to react to police addressing him. His family said he was at a grocery shop purchasing rolls. He was seemingly loaded into the back of a police van, where he died.
Police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed on Friday night that the two officials had been captured and would be accused of murder when they appear in court.
The directorate made this decision after carefully considering the evidence acquired thus far.
The Gauteng MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko welcomed the arrest and she said she was hoping that the Ipid would build a strong case to ensure that that the officers were not granted bail.
Last week, Gauteng Premier, David Makhura said Julies was killed in the crossfire of a shoot-out between police and a gang in the area.
“The boy, who was disabled, was allegedly caught in the crossfire between a gang and the SA Police Service on Wednesday. I am very disturbed about the events that led to the passing of an innocent boy,” Makhura said.
The matter has been postponed to September 10 for the accused to obtain legal representation. The two remain in custody.
