Gauteng’s COVID-19 recovery rate, higher than the national average- 25 February 2021

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has noted that, although Gauteng has the highest number of COVID-19 infections cumulatively it has the lowest COVID-19 mortality rate in the country.

Speaking at the State of the Province Address (SOPA) debate  during a hybrid house sitting, on Thursday, 25 February, Makhura thanked clinicians and healthcare workers on their ground-breaking innovations in the fight against COVID-19..

Gauteng is amongst the four provinces in the country with the lowest case fatality rate of 2.4% together with Northern Cape and North West, compared to 2.9% in Kwa-Zulu Natal, 3% in Limpopo, 3.9% in Free State, 4% in Western Cape and 5.8 in Eastern Cape.

The province currently has a recovery rate of 97% compared to 93% average recovery rate in the country.

"A  low case fatality rate means more lives have been saved," said Makhura.
