A fun filled occasion at Marivati Community Hall in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni when more than 150 older persons joined Gauteng Social Development MEC Morakane Mosupyoe for an aerobics session last Thursday.
Due to a rainy weather, the golden oldies (older persons aged 60 years and above) could not participate in other various activities such as rugby ball throw, pass and kick the ball, jukskei, dress-up, duck walk, athletics, and soccer.Speaking to older persons prior to an aerobics session, MEC Mosupyoe expressed her greater appreciation for the work that they do in taking care of the younger generation especially during a time where the country is faced with the Covid-19 pandemic.“It is very important to invest in the wellbeing of our older persons. Some of you are great guardians to grandkids. Staying physically fit is very important to keep your bodies going strong,” she said. The golden games were hosted across the province in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation as part of Social Development Month activities. The purpose of the games is to promote healthy living amongst older persons and to raise awareness on their rights and showcase that through sports they can fight chronic illnesses. The Director of Special Needs and Services to Families, Ms Khanyisile Mathebula, was pleased with how the games progressed throughout the province despite older persons not being able to participate last year due to an enforced hard lockdown.
