On Tuesday, 18th April 223, over two hundred (200) students at Ekurhuleni City College in Germiston received career guidance from industry experts on how to access bursaries, learnerships, internships and employment opportunities available in Gauteng.
The career expo was organised by the Department of Employment and Labour to address the struggles young people face when looking for jobs and to guide them in constructing proper resumes.Among the participants was the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Department of Health, and the South African Police Service (SAPS).Speaking to students, Gauteng Department of Social Development, Ekurhuleni Region, Sustainable Livelihoods, Community Development Supervisor, Nomthandazo Maphumulo said the Department offers a variety of career opportunities beyond social work.“As the Department, we do not only work with societal issues and give grants, but we also provide job opportunities to the youth. Through our Human Resource (HR) support, we offer bursaries, learnerships, and internships to young people to kick-start their careers.”“We also have job centres where we work with Non-Profit Organisations where they assist our people with creating CVs and apply for jobs,” she said.Maphumulo also spoke about some of the social services provided by the Department like gender-based violence and substance abuse, which further deter opportunities of young people, and how they can be assisted with the trauma and rehabilitation.“We also offer skills development programs such as carpentry, welding, computer training, and beauty therapy for one to access these vocations you must apply through the NPOs,” said Maphumulo.
