Gauteng Premier David Makhura has vowed to intervene in the service delivery challenges facing the community of Khutsong, Merafong in the West Rand.

The community is living in fear as sinkholes open up, damaging homes, water and sanitation infrastructure.

These struggles have been mirrored in countless protests in the area over the past few years.

"The sinkhole problem in the area is huge and affects government infrastructure including the sewer network and water supply," Premier Makhura said on Wednesday.

He attributed some of the challenges to ageing infrastructure.

Engaging the community, Makhura committed to studying the geotechnical assessment reports compiled by the local municipality and the Housing Development Agency (HDA).

For now, some of the affected families have been relocated to new government housing developments.

Premier Makhura who was joined by the Health MEC, Nomathemba-Mokgethi, went on to monitor operations at the new vaccination site in Khutsong South.

The municipality, which has an adult population of about 122 000, is leading in the vaccination rollout programme in the province.

"Those who are fully vaccinated are about 30% of that 61% which is above the national average. So we have come a very long way with this municipality on the vaccination programme."

Makhura said more than a million people in Gauteng have not gone back to receive their second jab of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine.

He highlighted that receiving the second jab of the vaccine gives you even more protection from getting severely ill if you contract COVID-19.

"I want to call upon over a million people across the province who has taken their first dose of Pfizer, whose days has come and passed to go and get their second jab," added Makhura.

The second jab is mainly for increasing antibodies, in case people catch the Coronavirus.

"We want to reach more people. Ahead of the November elections, ahead of the festive season and ahead of the potential fourth wave."

All Gauteng vaccination sites accept walk-ins. If you are 18 years and older, visit your nearest vaccination site with your proof of identity and get jabbed.
