Gauteng MEC for Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Lebogang Maile, accompanied by the City of Tshwane Administrators on Tuesday 26 May, visited the Rooiwaal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the City of Tshwane.
The visit was aimed at inspecting if construction had resumed at the facility.
The project was given the green light to resume construction after the lifting of level 5 lockdown regulations.
"We expect the contractor to work according to the agreed programme and timelines. Construction work is expected to be completed within 24 months, and the expected the completion date is 30 June 2022," said Maile
A contractor was appointed in August 2019, with work expected to commence in March 2020, but the project was delayed by legal and administrative issues, as well as the global coronavirus pandemic.
The plant has severely deteriorated due to ageing infrastructure and this has led to operations and maintenance challenges at the plant.
Due to the deteriorating plant, remedial costs have also increased over the years, and the gradual increase in the inflow from the main collection areas, as well as the bypass flows from the Daspoort and Zeekoegat WWTPs, has raised environmental concerns.
MEC Maile said the visit forms part of the Gauteng provincial government's commitment to ensure that there's efficient service delivery in the City of Tshwane.
