Gauteng Premier, David Makhura joined members of the South African Police Service to ramp-up operation Okae Molao in Tembisa as part of Ntirhisano outreach programme that he announced during the State Of the Premier Address to heighten crime prevention in the province.
During a road block in the area, Premier Makhura said the police and the Department of Community Safety were in the area in response to challenges of crime that people have raised and have been experiencing in their homes and communities.
"Let us work together to ensure that our communities are safe and move beyond mere words, and that it results in real change in the lives of South Africa's women and children," said Premier Makhura.
Premier encouraged police officers to use the resources they have available to them to not only intercept crime, but to root it out in communities.
"Police must use all available resources at their disposal to root out violent crime in communities and intercept would-be gangs or anyone with the intent to create lawlessness," he said.
Operation Okae Molao is aimed at reducing levels of crime in the province for the safety of Gauteng residents.
Tembisa community members complained to the Premier about illegal guns that perpetuate the scourge of crime in the area.
"In the past 24 hours, 806 arrests have been made with 165 being Gender-Based Violence related cases involving161 women and 4 children," said premier.
The operation also saw members of Social Crime Prevention conducting school searches at two high schools in the area to ensure the safety of learners and teachers.
