As the country gears up to commemorate the 44 anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising on  Tuesday 16 June 2020, the Gauteng Provincial Government is calling all young people in the province, to join the rest of the world in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

While the pandemic has altered the way people do business and interact with government, the provincial government's youth empowerment programme, Tshepo 1Million continues to change the lives of Gauteng youth by providing them with skills training, job placement and entrepreneurship development.

During an interview with YFM on the eve on Youth Day, Tshepo 1 Million Director, Bongani Mabuse said the programme has changed the lives of 706 000 young people in the province.

In commemorating Youth Day under level 3 of the nationwide lockdown, the Gauteng Provincial Government will host a virtual commemoration under the theme: Youth Power against Covid-19 and calls on the youth of Gauteng to be the ambassadors of change behaviour in the fight against Covid-19.

"Our success in overcoming the coronavirus will ultimately be determined by the changes we make in our everyday behaviour. As we ease down the lockdown restrictions, we must continue to observe social distancing and practise good hygiene," said the provincial government in a statement.

More than 200 000 COVID-19 Youth Brigades have been trained by the provincial government and have been deployed across the province to ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations in Gauteng schools.
