34-year -old Zanele Ngubane from Basuthwini Hostel in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni was one of the parents and community members who participated at the launch of ChommY programme by the Social Development, Deputy Minister, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.
Ngubane, a volunteer in the community, brought her two kids. She said she doesn’t regret attending the event as the programme was educational and very informative to children who were present. She added that she was approached by the ward councillor together with other community members to start mobilising children because government was visiting their area.“I felt honoured to be part of this activity, the kids were taught on things such as teenage pregnancy, STI, sex and where to report when they are being abused etc,” said Ngubane.“I think such programmes are needed especially in hostels and informal settlement because we are not exposed to community activities. We want them to come back as I have also learned on how to communicate with my children.Ngubane said many youths in hostels are using and supplying drugs, and others ended up dropping out of school.“Such programmes will encourage our children to make informed decisions, as parents we are encouraged and hope it’s a not the last time we get such engagement, “concludes Ngubane.
