Gauteng has recorded at least 45 678 COVID-19 active cases as at 20 July with confirmed cases sitting at 822 159, 760 876 recoveries and 15 605 deaths.
Scientists have warned that although Gauteng has reached the peak of the third wave of COVID-19, numbers are still very high, and the healthcare system remains strained.
More people require hospital care and the increase in hospital admissions continue to place a heavy strain on the health system in both public and private sectors.
A total of 8804 people are currently hospitalised, 3393 in public and 5172 in private healthcare facilities across the province.
"Government and the private sector continue to monitor the situation and where the need arises, beds will be repurposed to create additional capacity for those requiring hospital care," said Makhura.
The provincial government continues to urge all eligible persons to visit their nearest vaccination site to get vaccinated.
The registration and vaccination for persons aged 35-49 opened on Wednesday 15 July 2021.
Gauteng continues to expand initiatives to increase mobilisation for vaccination for eligible persons.
"As of Monday, 19 July 2021 a total of 1 285 639 people have been vaccinated and 1 868 046 people have registered in the Electronic Vaccination Data System in the province, said Premier Makhura.
