Elderly care centres play a crucial role in providing a safe and engaging space for senior citizens to socialize and stay active in their golden years. These facilities offer a variety of activities, including games, sports, singing, and exercise programs, all aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being.

In line with its commitment to supporting the elderly, Mogale City Mayor Lucky Sele and Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko officially opened the Kagiso Elderly Centre recently.

The much-anticipated facility will serve as a dedicated space for senior citizens to gather, stay active, and participate in enriching activities.

Among those celebrating the launch was 72-year-old Sebesabatho Peter Koloane, an enthusiastic sports enthusiast who remains passionate about running and soccer. Expressing his excitement, Koloane noted that the new centre will bring great relief to elderly residents of Kagiso 1, who previously had to travel 30 minutes to access a similar facility in Kagiso 2. Now, he only needs to walk 10 minutes from his home, saving him valuable time and energy.

Koloane has been a dedicated participant in the Golden Games, competing in the 100-meter race for the past four years. This year, in celebration of the newly opened centre, he plans to challenge himself by running the 200-meter race.

"I feel so happy and proud that this facility has finally been opened after such a long wait," he said. "We, the elders, will now have a space to socialize, exercise, and keep ourselves engaged with various sports during the day." He also expressed his gratitude to the Gauteng Department of Social Development for prioritizing the well-being of senior citizens.

Koloane further pledged that the community would take great care of the facility, ensuring that it remains in excellent condition for future generations. "We commit to the MEC and the Department that we will maintain this facility so well that even today's 15-year-olds will still be able to use it when they reach their golden years," he affirmed.

The opening of the Kagiso Elderly Centre marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve the lives of senior citizens, providing them with a space where they can stay active, connected, and engaged.
