The Department of Health displayed its emergency fleet which will enhance the province's festive season campaign. To ensure quick responder times a fleet of over 400 operational vehicles will respond to the public's emergencies.
It's all systems go for the campaign, aptly themed: "Beyond the Call of Duty - Responding to Emergencies, Preserving Lives."
MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko briefed the media on Wednesday, 12 November 2024 on the department's state of readiness where she showcased a fleet of ambulances, primary response vehicles, rescue vehicles, a disaster response bus, and mobile centers. Each vehicle is equipped with advanced technology that has the necessary medical care.
Statistics show that during the festive season, emergency service calls can increase by up to 25% due to accidents and celebration-related incidents, placing significant demand and pressure on healthcare facilities.
MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko outlined plans that will be executed by the department by using every resource in its disposal to respond effectively to the healthcare needs of communities.
"All our 38 community health centres operating 24 hours a day will remain open throughout the festive season. This will ensure that our communities always have access to the much-needed essential medical care. No one should miss out on their treatment during this period."
The MEC assured the public that sufficient staff will be assigned to their respective posts, equipped in all the hospitals and clinics across all five health district regions with the necessary resources to efficiently carry out their duties.
"We have deployed a team of 4,200 staff members that are all trained, experienced and ready to assist during this busy period.
"Furthermore, we have in this 2024/25 financial year trained over 3 700 community members across the province as first responders surpassing our annual target of 2 500," added MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
Patients receiving medication from health facilities will not be impacted by the increased volume of emergency cases. The Medical Supplies Depot (MSD) is committed to maintaining a 95% medication availability rate, ensuring that supply consistently meets and exceeds demand.
The MEC stressed the importance of sexual health, encouraging the use of free condoms available at hospitals and clinics.
She also highlighted the need for food safety to prevent foodborne illnesses. She advised residents to use proper hygiene practices to avoid contamination, and the importance of staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
