Gauteng Premier, David Makhura together with MEC for Health,Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi, have opened a newly built 150-bedded COVID-19 isolation ward at Bronkhospruit Hospital in Tshwane on Thursday, 06 May 2021.
The hospital was upgraded in partnership with BMW South Africa andthe German government.
Premier Makhura, said the facility was an investment in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, which requires a joint effort from all sectors of society.
"As the provincial government, we are not erecting field hospitals but building infrastructure that will continue to provide our communities with access to healthcare services beyond the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.
He said working with the private sector would help government manage and reduce risk factors and improve the quality and capacity of the healthcare infrastructure.
"The partnership further ensured that we increase the capacity of the Soshanguve Block TT Clinic, Dr George Mukhari Hospital, eight secondary hospitals which include the Jubilee and Bronkhorstspruit Hospitals and four Primary Health Care Clinics within Tshwane," he added.
Premier noted that the hospital was not only meant for COVID-19 related cases but would also provide the community with access to better healthcare beyond the pandemic.
In addition, Premier Makhura warned of possible third wave.
"We remain on high alert to survey, detect and contain the spread of COVID-19 in the province. We are monitoring hospital admissions, mortality, and the increase in mobility. The province has built enormous tracking capacity which includes monitoring on a daily basis," he said.
BMW Group South Africa CEO, Peter van Binsbergen, said additional support for the fight against Covid-19 was urgently needed.
"This contribution is part of our global Emergency COVID-19 Support Programme to help expand health infrastructure in developing countries, ensure food security and stabilise crisis and refugee regions," said Binbergen.
