As part of ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse and improve access to treatment, Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, officially opened the Tladi Walk-in Community Centre in Soweto on Monday, 31 March 2024. The opening aims to address the shortage of inpatient treatment facilities by offering accessible services to the community of Tladi and surrounding areas.
Speaking at the launch, Mazibuko highlighted the urgent need for such facilities, stating; "As a province, we have about 32,000 substance users on our waiting list. Through this walk-in centre, alongside our mobile clinics, we hope to reach and assist those committed to overcoming addiction."
The centre will, at a later stage, go beyond treatment by equipping recovering substance users with essential skills, including plumbing, electrical work, and computer literacy, to support their reintegration into society. Acting Head of Department, Bongani Ngomane, urged the community to safeguard the facility, emphasizing its critical role in helping individuals reclaim their lives.
Expressing gratitude, Thembekile Ndaba (32) from Senaoane, Soweto, shared her personal struggle with substance abuse, saying, "I have been smoking nyaope for seven years, and a centre like this will go a long way in helping young people who want to quit." She encouraged others to take advantage of the opportunity for rehabilitation as a fresh start.
Operating Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00, the centre will mainly handle assessments and referrals; however, long-term services will include detoxification, treatment, aftercare, skills development programs, and recreational activities, ensuring support is available within the community.
This initiative reaffirms the government's commitment to tackling substance abuse by bringing essential services closer to those in need and fostering healthier, more empowered communities.
