The Gauteng Provincial Government has welcomed the announcement of Morakane Mosupyoe as the new MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment.
The announcement was made by Premier David Makhura on Friday, 11 October 2019 at Emoyeni, Johannesburg in line with the 6 administration's resolution for women to occupy strategic position in government. Mosupyoe replaces Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.
Mosupyoe served as the Chairperson of the Social Development Portfolio Committee at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature a position she held until her appointment into the Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment portfolio.
She also served as a councillor in the City of Tshwane from 2006 to 2016, she has also served as the MMC for Health and Social Development. She also formed part of the Social and Economic cluster over the same period.
Makhura said the new MEC comes with a wealth of experience in governance.
"In 2011 she became the first female speaker of the City of Tshwane until 2016 when the term ended. Mosupyoe is currently a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and also serves on the Provincial Working Committee (PWC) of the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng, said Premier Makhura.
Premier Makhura applauded the outgoing MEC, Dr. Ramokgopa for his patriotic service in ensuring that economic investment is achieved in Gauteng.
"I wish to thank Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa the outgoing MEC for the sterling work he has done over the past four (4) months. Dr. Ramokgopa has done a great job towards unlocking investment and economic opportunities in all five (5) corridors of our province. I wish Dr. Ramokgopa well in his new role, which will be announced soon," added Makhura.
Premier Makhura said that he was confident that Mosupyoe would build on the solid foundation laid by the former MEC of growing the economy of Gauteng through the creation of an integrated multi-tier Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
