Ms Gomotsang Gaobodiwe (42) is more than just a name in Lenasia, she is a symbol of resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication. Born and raised in the heart Lena's vibrant community, Ms Gaobodiwe's life took an unexpected turn when she was a victim of domestic violence.

The experience, while harrowing, ignited a fire within her. From a woman who once felt powerless, Ms Gaobodiwe discovered strength she never knew she had. She channelled her pain into a mission to help others.

Joining the Lenasia Gender-Based-Violence and Femicide (GBVF) brigade programme was a natural progression for her. She found a sense of belonging and purpose. Her role as a GBVF brigade is multifaceted as she provides emotional support to survivors by offering a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.

Ms Gaobodiwe's innate understanding of the complexities of abuse enables her to empower survivors and reclaim their lives to break free from the cycle of violence.  Ms Gaobodiwe often attends a wide range of issues within her community, such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and child neglect.

She works closely with the Lenasia police station in collaboration with other organisations such as Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), social service providers, one-stop-centres, and shelters to ensure that victims have access to comprehensive support programmes.

Ms Gaobodiwe witnesses the horrors of GBV which can cause emotional trauma. She candidly shares that what becomes part of her challenge involves striking balance so that she does not become overly attached.

"Even though it is difficult. I personally study how to deal with trauma. The complexities in cases we come across are often a reflection of the broader societal issues," explains Ms Gaobodiwe.

" I've also found that in a household where no one is working, the grandmother often stays with many grandchildren where they depend on her grant. We involve social development on such cases," she added.

Ms Gaobodiwe's message for Women's month is that women should strive for independence and happiness. She says that "love yourself first, every day, when you wake up, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you are beautiful, strong, and untouchable. That no circumstances will bring you down," said Ms Gaobodiwe.

"Women must not allow themselves to stay in abusive situations. We are here to assist them. With that being said, I wish all the women out there a Happy women's month" concluded Ms Gaobodiwe.
