The Smart Mobility Weekend service delivery campaign entered its sixth week on 22 and 23 May 2021 and has started yielding positive results in addressing major road defects within the province.
This past weekend the campaign took place in Fochville, Merafong City Municipality.
The initiative by the Gauteng Department of Public Transport and Road Infrastructure in partnership with the City of Johannesburg focused on pothole repairs, road reinstatements and other road maintenance work.
MEC for Public Transport and Road Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo said focusing on road maintenance will bring widespread benefits by not only preserving current assets, but also lowering future costs for residents, road users, taxpayers and road owners.
"Roads are used daily by multiple vehicles. They are used for safe passage from one location to another, which is why it is essential to keep roads in good condition.
"The costs of having to repair an entire road due to poor maintenance, or lack of maintenance, is much more expensive than performing maintenance that acts as a preventative measure against major repairs" he added.
The Smart Mobility Weekend campaign will run for six months to ensure that the quality of the provincial road network and its infrastructure is improved.
