The Gauteng Department of Health is urging parents to ensure that their children are immunized against polio. Immunization is a critical step in safeguarding the health of our little ones and preventing the resurgence of this serious disease.
Polio is a disease caused by a virus that primarily touches the nerves in the spinal cord or brain stem. It is also known as poliomyelitis. Polio can lead to a person being unable to move certain limbs, which can cause paralysis and sometimes death. With those paralyzed, 5-10% pass away when their breathing muscles become immobilized.
In Gauteng, the immunization treatment of children under the age of one year has been declining. In 2021/22 financial year the treatment was 88% (231 991), however, the performance declined in 2022/23 financial year with 84.1% (217 787) treatment and subsequently to 83.2% (212 385) in 2023/24 financial year. The decline in immunization treatment has the potential of causing disease outbreaks which may include polio.
Polio is caused by 1 of 3 types of the poliovirus and it regularly spreads due to contact with infected feces. This often occurs due to poor handwashing, from drinking or eating contaminated food or water. It is important to prioritise immunization of children in an effort to ensure a polio-free future for everyone.
Healthcare facilities provide free vaccines to protect children against polio and other life-threatening diseases. Parents are advised to take this vital step in protecting their children's health. If your child has missed any vaccinations, please visit your clinic as soon as possible.
