Indicators show that the third wave of Covid-19 in Gauteng is wane, as the vaccination rollout programme is gaining momentum.
As of Monday, 09 August Gauteng has recorded 878 438 number of confirmed cases, with 840 764 recoveries and 17 676 deaths.
"This is an indication that we are not yet out of the woods and should therefore remain vigilant, it also means just a few super spreader events could easily lead to outbreaks and spark a resurgence in cases," Health spokesperson Motaletale Modiba said.
The number of new hospitalisations is also on the decline. Despite the decline, the department warned that the risk of infection and the pressure on healthcare workers remains high.
The province has administered 1 million jabs during the month of July, alone. Currently, the total number of vaccinationed citizens stands at over 2 million.
As part of accelerating the vaccination programme, Gauteng has opened the West Rand health district to operate over the weekend.
This increased the vaccination sites from 16 to 26.
Modiba, said the sites operating on weekends gives opportunities to those who work during the week.
"This provides an opportunity for those who work during the weekdays to be able to also get their jabs, our sites will accept walk-ins whether people are registered on the EVDs or not", said Modiba. ENDS
