The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is concerned about the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations which is putting pressure on the provincial healthcare facilities.
In the weekly Provincial Command Council media update, Premier David Makhura said another worry was the growing number of children testing positive for COVID-19 with more than 1 000 children at province's public schools testing positive of the pandemic in the past week.
"While there are no plans to close schools just yet, government is monitoring the situation and will be guided by expert advice.
"Each individual has the power to stop the spread. Let us avoid gatherings as they lead to super spreader events with a lot of potential transmissions.
"The virus does not move from place to place by itself it relies on the movement of people. Let us limit our movements where possible to minimise the spread," said Premier Makhura.
Government working with partners will continue to reach out to persons over 60 years through field workers supported by the call centre to assist them with their nearest vaccination site so that they can get vaccinated
"We are continuously improving the scheduling of vaccinations in the current vaccination sites to increase the number of vaccinations being administered. The provincial government has increased vaccination sites from 103 to 129 sites (89 public and 40 private).
"The more people get vaccinated for COVID-19, the closer we will get back to the things we love, closer to the normal we once knew, to the heart-warming hugs and long visits with family and friends, to the adventures and discoveries of traveling, seeing new places and sharing precious moments that have been missed for over a year," he said.
