Munaka Mulaudzi is a statutory social worker based at the Gauteng Department of Social Development in Carletonville Service Point Office. Mulaudzi is tasked with professional services in childcare and protection services. She is passionate about her work and wants to make a difference in the Social Work Profession.

She believes that through her Social Work Profession she can make a difference in the lives of those who are vulnerable in society. Since she joined the department, she says “ I have seen lives changed because of Social Workers. At work, I am inspired by the motto that says change the country by changing your world”.

Mulaudzi believes everyone must be that visionary that the country is looking for; one who will step out from the crowd, find a need and reach out to meet that need. A person that inspires others to positive action and that is what Social Workers do.

“For me, social work means more than earning. It goes beyond a feeling of satisfaction and just doing good. The time I invest and spend with a foster child means commitment, it means work, and it means understanding” said Mulaudzi.

She says the time spent trying to help someone that is thinking about committing suicide or someone who has lost hope, someone who has lost a sense to continue in this troublesome world, or someone who is just craving to know that they are important too, a child that just need to know that they are worth it and deserve love, means the responsibility of life to a social worker.

Mulaudzi adds that she has witnessed many families getting restored due to our mediation services, couples who were headed for separation, yet they came together and fixed their marriages. She has also witnessed amazing foster parents, who genuinely care for the unrelated foster children without looking at the foster care grant.

Mulaudzi shared a story of two children who were removed from their siblings and placed in temporary foster care. The foster parent volunteered to buy school uniforms for the children and provided all their basic needs without a complaint.

She also shared another story of foster children who irrespective of their environment showed consistency in their studies and were able to complete their matric and further their education. So, what is social work? Well according to Mulaudzi is an investment in human life.
