Government is working on introducing a COVID-19 digital vaccination certificate to confirm that a person has been vaccinated.

The certificate with fraud and other security protections will be available through a person's smartphone and can also be printed out.

Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla who made the announcement on Friday said the certificate will be made available in about a week's time to anyone who has been vaccinated.

"The certificate will be available even to those of us who vaccinated a few days, weeks or months ago," said Phaahla.

These certificates may be useful for access to entertainment, sports and other events.

This initiative is in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) certificate which attempts to standardise vaccination proof all over the world.

South Africa has administered 14 690 586 COVID-19 vaccines, as the number of new infections continues to drop. Gauteng has vaccinated over 3,8 million people, with Johannesburg leading with over 1,6 million.

People are encouraged to continue practicing the COVID-19 safety measures to minimise contact and reduce infections in communities.

Gauteng vaccination roll-out programme continues to expand through innovative partnerships between government, civil society, faith-based organisations, media, taxi industry and businesses.

Gauteng has further extended vaccination days to the weekend to accommodate those who cannot go to the vaccination sites during weekdays.

Last week the province took the vaccination programme to the institution of higher learning across the province, to get more young people to be vaccinated.
