Department of e-Government 2024/12/05 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of e-Government on 06 December 2024, hosted the highly anticipated Youth Tech Expo at Enhlanzeni Hostel, an event aimed at empowering young people with the tools and knowledge to thrive in a digital economy.

The MEC for e-Government, Mr. Bonginkosi Dhlamini, delivered an address to the youth, emphasising the significance of integrating marginalised communities into Gauteng's digital transformation.

"The purpose of this expo is to bring empowerment to TISH areas (townships, informal settlements, and hostels). It is imperative that these communities are not left behind but rather integrated into the system. Technology has the power to connect and uplift, and we are here to ensure it happens," said MEC Dhlamini.

The MEC encouraged the youth to take full advantage of the opportunities presented at the expo, stressing the importance of proactive engagement. "I urge you to shape your own future by not taking platforms like this for granted. Actively seek opportunities that will impact your lives for the better by obtaining information from the partners and exhibitors here today," he added.

The expo also brought together key stakeholders, including BAM Telecoms, Siyafunda CTC, Lubanzi, South African Artificial Intelligience Association, Auko Designs, VumaCam, Telkom Gauteng Provincial Treasury and FNB who actively participated in creating an environment that promotes learning and skill development for the youth.

The event showcased the Department's commitment to bridging the digital divide through its flagship initiative, the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN). By providing high-speed connectivity, even throughout the event, the GPN aims to ensure that all communities, particularly those in historically underserved areas, are part of the province's digital economy.

This refers to what MEC Dhlamini alluded to when he noted that e-Gov is a Department  that "breaks boundaries" wherein he highlighted this notion as a key driver in enabling access to e-learning, tech entrepreneurship, and digital job opportunities.

Overall, the event not only inspired the youth to take charge of their futures but also showcased the Department's unwavering commitment to creating a connected, innovative, and empowered Gauteng for all.
