Gauteng MEC of Social Development Morakane Mosupyoe, on Tuesday, unveiled the new Wembley Stadium Homeless Shelter.
The shelter, which operates under the Ikusasa Lethu Youth Project, replaces tents that were erected as a temporary measure to accommodate displaced people during the hard Lockdown Level 5 in March 2020.
The new shelter offers a holistic development programme for displaced people that look at the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of each person.
Those with health issues are referred to clinics or provincial hospitals while those with emotional issues are referred to psychologists says programme administrator Makhosonke Dlamini.
"Since its inception, the shelter has taken care of 566 homeless people that came at different intervals. 202 beneficiaries were referred for substance abuse.
"About 53 beneficiaries are currently admitted and being taken care of whilst 14 beneficiaries are hired temporarily by the construction company to build Park home," said Social Development MEC Morakane Mosupyoe.
Mosupyoe said the mandate of government is to take care of the vulnerable groups in the society by placing them in temporary shelters to later reunite them with their families.
The homeless are human beings, like every other person who lives on the planet Mosupyoe said adding that the vast majority of people who find themselves living on the streets are desperate.
"The are many reasons as to why one might find themselves being homeless such as becoming unemployed, serious medical conditions, dealing with an ongoing substance use disorder (SUD), or the inability to keep up to date with rental agreements," MEC added.
