Department on track to deliver Emfuleni roads, freight hubs – MEC Mamabolo

​In his 2021/22 Budget Speech, MEC Jacob Mamabolo committed the Department to completely turnaround the roads Infrastructure in the Emfuleni local municipality.

He also announced the Department has already spent over R170 million on roads maintenance and development in the municipality.

"We committed ourselves, working with all GPG departments, to completely turnaround the roads infrastructure in Emfuleni. Honourable members we have just concluded the spend of R173 million on roads in Emfuleni Municipality. We are now ready to unveil the 21 revamped and improved roads and hand them over to the municipality of Emfuleni. We will handover these roads starting in July this year"

He added the Department "will be approaching the Executive Council to request more funds to fix the remaining roads. Our capacity is ready".

The MEC also indicated the Department has "adopted and unveiled Smart Mobility Weekends as a dedicated extra-capacity to catch up with the backlogs of Covid-19 lockdowns that affected our maintenance program". This is "part of ensuring that the road network continues to serve and grow the economy".

Through the Smart Mobility Weekends campaign, municipalities including the City of Joburg, Emfuleni, Merafong, Randwest and Midvaal have already benefitted. The campaign will be extended to other municipalities – cities of Ekurhuleni and Tshwane, Mogale City and Lesedi.

MEC Mamabolo further announced that, consistent with the Department's vision of Smart Mobility "we are repositioning Gauteng as a Freight and Logistic Hub". He revealed that the Department was working with the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) following a ground-breaking meeting led by Premier David Makhura to drive the Aerotropolis, a program to leverage the airport to build an economy. "We are building roads to support this program".

He also announced that "we are also working with the private sector to support the Tambo Springs Terminal along the N3 in Ekurhuleni and the Pyramid South Intermodal Freight terminal in the City of Tshwane".
