Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has officially reopened the Lenasia South District hospital on Friday, following extensive refurbishment by over the past few months.
Joined by acting MEC for Health Jacob Mamabolo, MEC for Infrastructure Development and Property Management,Tasneem Motara and Joburg Mayor, Geoff Makhubo, Makhura said the hospital has been refurbished with new equipment including state of the art beds and X-ray machines.
"The hospital has new equipment including state of the art beds and X-ray machines. We also received a donation of 103 beds from Steyn City Foundation with Oxygen points, geysers and we added more health care workers. The community will now receive comprehensive health care which was previously not possible," said Makhura.
The hospital was previously a Community Health Centre, but due to the high demand in the area it was upgraded by the provincial government in partnership with Steyn City Foundation.
MEC Motara said R48 million has been spent on improvements at the facility.
"We directly appointed five companies to do the work and they were able to employ more community members during lockdown to assist in supporting their families," she said.
In addition, Premier Makhura noted that the hospital has over 100 beds for Covid-19 patients. He also committed to ensure that the hospital would not be tainted with corruption and mismanagement of funds.
He further made a commitment that government would provide an additional 1 500 hospital beds to other facilities across the province.
