As part of the Public Service Week, Gauteng Provincial Government ramped up efforts to encourage the public to get vaccinated against COVID-19. This saw several senior managers from various state departments in the province being deployed to several vaccine sites, malls and taxi ranks for monitoring and assessment.
On Tuesday, Corporate Services, Deputy-Director General, Amanda Hartman accompanied by Social Services, Chief Director, Tebello Mkhonto visited Ennerdale Civic Centre in Extension 9, vaccination site to interact with the vaccinated and examine the site.“We are here today to assess the sites and to interact with the people on the ground, we want to encourage them to take the vaccine because If more people take vaccines, it means strict lockdown regulations may be relaxed and we can travel again to spend time with family and friends. More economic activities can resume and allow for more job opportunities to be created”, said Hartmann. She said they are generally happy with how the vaccination site operate and the way they comply with the regulations in terms of their assessment.“We are happy with this site, the place is clean and there is social distancing, and the attendance as well give us hope, as you can see that there is a long queue, we hope that people will listen to us when we go outside to talk to them to come in their numbers”.Hartmann added that. “It is important for people to play their part in helping government to fight this pandemic, vaccines help reduce severe illness and hospitalisation in the event one contracts the coronavirus”.One community member Wilhelmina Martins (48) from Ennerdale who was standing on the queue waiting to be vaccinated said she was reluctant to be vaccinated but has since decided to vaccinate and was happy. Martins encouraged others to come register for their jabs.According to the officials the site uses only Pfizer vaccine, and administer between 250 to 300 vaccines per day. While some senior officials were busy assessing the vaccination site, others were wooing the community in the nearby shopping centre to go and vaccinate. Some community members responded positively to go and register while others are still reluctant. The campaign was attended by several senior managers from the department deployed in other areas and will continue until 7 October 2021.
